Dr. Sarat Kumar Malik is a preeminent economist with a strong academic and professional background. He brings over 34 years of distinguished leadership experience, including an impressive tenure of 23 years as Chief General Manager at Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), where he played a pivotal role in shaping financial regulations. Prior to that, he spent 11 years at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), holding pivotal roles in diverse areas such as Banking Supervision, Foreign Exchange, and Monetary Policy.

Beyond his leadership positions within regulatory bodies, Dr. Malik actively contributed on numerous committees, including those established by the Government of Maharashtra, the Statistical Commission of India, the RBI, and SAARC. He also led the International Monetary Fund’s Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) and played a significant role in SEBI’s Policy Advisory Group.

Dr. Malik’s dedication extends beyond his official titles. Being the editor of the SEBI Monthly Bulletin and a member of the Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC), has positioned him as a key architect of regulations. These regulations have a far-reaching impact, shaping not only secondary and primary markets, but also mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors, and a diverse array of financial instruments. His vast experience and expertise have earned him a well-deserved reputation as a respected figure in the realm of financial governance and policy.

He holds a BA in Economics from Ravenshaw College in Cuttack, Odisha, and an MA in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. He further distinguished himself by earning a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, specializing in the critical area of ‘Stock Market Development and Long-Run Growth in India’ under the guidance of Professor Enrol D’Souza.
